I bought this intake manifold used off Ebay. The KLG4 is known to be a better intake manifold than the KLDE intake manifold and comparable to the KLZE Intake manifold
I did a lot of searching prior to buying this intake manifold particularly to see if a KLDE throttle body would fit on it. I have 2 KLDE throttle body’s already, why not make use of one and save my self some money.
I mocked up the KLG4 Manifold on my spare engine and then tried attaching the throttle body.
Discovery’s:
1.The bolt pattern is identical.
2. The IAC cover on the KLDE throttle body protrudes on the bottom side towards the intake manifold about 1/4″. This prevents it from fully seating against the manifold
It appears this part of the intake manifold is just extra flange and could be taken off with a grinder to fit the throttle body. Otherwise a 1/4″ spacer is needed to mate it up.
3. The plenum inlet and throttle body outlet are different. The plenum inlet is circle, the throttle body is oval. This could be accommodated with a spacer that transitions from oval to circle, however it doesn’t seem to be
any obstruction from just mounting the throttle body as is.
The Problems and how to Adapt
IAC Solenoid Valve
while the KLDE throttle body fits the KLG4 Manifold with modification, the KLG4 manifold and KLDE throttle body do not fit on the KLDE Block together.
The IAC valve solenoid is directly in the path of the upper heater house outlet. This can only be accommodated by:
1. Modfiying the heater house outlet nipple to a new direction
2. A 1.5″ spacer between the throttle body and intake manifold that allows it to clear the heater hose as it is. This spacer would also require relocation of the throttle cable bracket or longer throttle cable.
IAC Inlet Hose
There is also no spot for the KLDE throttle body IAC inlet port on the intake manifold. This could be resolved in the following ways
1. Weld a nipple to the intake manifold to accept the IAC hose. A unformed hose would be required.
2. Make an adapter hose from 5/8 ID to 3/8 ID to plug into an existing vacuum port on the manifold.
Spacer Transition Adapter
For a fun project I modeled up a printable spacer that could adapt the KLDE throttle body to the KLG4 intake manifold. This model is the correct spacing to clear heater hose and has a nice transition form oval to round hole. It also features a side port with 1/2 NPT threads to utilize a 1/2″ 90 to 5/8 barb fitting to connect the KLDE IAC hose.
You can download this model FREE at our downloads page.
My Plan:
Using the KLDE throttle body is cost effective, it will cost me nothing. However it would require more work. Making a spacer and relocation of the throttle cable is not an issue, however this would also require modification of my existing intercooler charge pipe in such a way thats complicated.
So I will be buying a used KLG4 throttle body and rebuilding it, with new electronics and connectors.
