Material Information

Locator main body

  • The locater is made with Polymaker ASA filament, 20% Infill and 4 walls for extra durability. To add serviceability to the mount, its printed in 2 pieces, the top half is secured to the bottom half using 5mm stainless steel socket head cap screws, both halves are mated together with a tongue and groove lip to create a tight seal.
  • On the locater exterior surface, embedded in the side’s is the orientation for mounting indicating the front, left, right and rear with arrows, along with logo.

Locator Lasers

  • For precise X,Y,Z alignment, 5/16-18 stainless steel grub screws secure the locater to the torch body in 4 positions. This will allow you to align the locater to your torch to get the best accuracy.
  • Each Laser is fused into an adjustable holder that can be moved left or right to align your laser beams as you wish.  Each adjustable holder has a 8-32 grub screw to lock the holder into position.
  • Each laser is wired to separate connectors inside so they can be removed and replaced without any wiring skill.

Locater Lens

  • The locater lens is a laser cut scratch resistant acrylic. It is held in place on the bottom of the locater by a twist lock printed cap. The cap features embedded markings for the direction to lock and unlock on all 4 sides.

Wiring

  • The wiring for this locater is very common and simple. It is 2.1mm Barrel Jack cable, connected to an option of a 5vt AC/DC power supply wall plug or USB male end. The cable can be easily extended with and additional 2.1mm barrel jack connector cable.

Servicing

  • The locater was carefully designed for details that allow it to be broken down to its core components with common tools and low effort. All fasteners are stainless steel and utilize Allen screw tools.
  • Each laser has its own connector and can be remove from the locater body.

FAQ

How good is the laser durability?

I have tested these laser locaters for 4 years under rigorous conditions, including leaving the lasers on for extended amounts of time (example, left on for weeks). I have never had one fail or become dim.  However, I do not manufacture the lasers themselves nor have dealer pricing for them, so I do not offer any warranty on the lasers themselves. I do not recommend leaving the lasers on permanently or extended periods (weeks, months) for common sense sake, all electronics eventually fail. Left on for long durations will just shorten the life of the laser.

Warranty & Return

Warranty:

I offer a craftsman’s ship warranty on the locater only.  This covers any defect in the part that was an oversight during its fabrication.  Such as: wiring errors, DOA lasers, cracked, deformed, or broken parts.

Return’s:

The laser locater is built to order.  When your order is placed, it is made specifically for you. I do not have any interest in receiving a locater back for a return if it was purchased, shipped and later decided the end user did not want it or did not fit their torch. I have included as much information as possible on this locater to allow the buyer to be fully confident this laser locater is what they desire and that it will fit your Plasma CNC torch. If you have any fitment questions, please email.

Warranty Returns:

In event a craftsmanship warranty is issued, I weight the options of the return shipping cost and replacement cost. Often it is more practical and cost effective to ship the correction to you and not return the original item. I designed this locater to be user serviceable, it can be completely taken apart to its core parts with common tools.

Such as for examples:

Example 1. There is a crack in the locater body.  In this case I would ship a new locater body, and you would transfer the good parts from the cracked body to the new body.

Example 2.  One of the lasers is DOA. In this case I would ship a new laser, and you would replace the DOA laser in the body with replacement laser.

Example 3.  The lens cap does not lock. In this case I would ship a new body and lens cap, and you would transfer the good parts to the new body and cap.

Installation

Step 1. Power Supply

1.AC Wall adapter

The AC Wall adapter can go directly to a wall socket, or switch AC ports on your controller. If you choose a wall socket, you will need to unplug the locater when not being used. If you choose the controller, see your machine information for turning the port on and off.

2.USB power

The USB port can plug directly into your pc or a USB wall socket adapter. For the PC you can configure USB ports to cut power during sleep mode or utilize a USB manual rocker switch.  For a wall socket adapter you will need to unplug the locater when not being used.

3. Custom wiring

The locater requires 2.5-5volts maximum.  6-7 volts will shorten the laser life drastically and any higher will burn it out instantly.  If your machine features 12 volts output, use a voltage regulator. The cable can be cut at the barrel jack connection and strip internal wires.  Red = positive, Black = negative.

Step 2 Laser Body

Adjust all 4 set screws inward equally so that they are snug on the torch body but still allowing the laser body to slide up and down.

Slide the Laser Body up as far as your machine allows. The further up it is the better the laser lines will project and the protective lens will last longer/ less able to get dirty. Snug the mounting set screws to the machine torch. Take caution as to not overtighten causing damage to the torch or Laser locater.

Step 3 Plug in the Laser Locater

Route the wiring for the laser locater with your existing machine wiring, typically the same path the machine torch cable takes. Plug in your power supply.

Step 4 Adjust the Lasers

Each laser can be independently positioned to align them with your machine.  Move the laser adjuster (green arrow) left or right to line it up with your machine.  Once desired position is set, snug up the set screw to keep it in place (red arrow). Do this for all laser adjusters.

If the Laser Locater does not stay centered on the focal point as the torch is moved up and down, this is where the mounting set screws can be used to tilt the laser locater as needed to match your machine.

The laser locater can only be aligned and centered as your machine is. If your torch is bent, damaged, not aligned correctly, no amount of adjusting the laser locater will keep it centered as the torch is moved up and down.  If your machine has this type of damage, the locater can still be used as an edge alignment tool when JOGing the machine to square up material.
