If your new, this mod may seem way over your head, but dont stress its quite easy.<\/p><p>The HEI mod is effectively using a well known, reliable and inexpensive ignition module from a different vehicle.&nbsp; In this case its the GM HEI ( High Energy Ignition) module that\u2019s been used on old GM V8 engines since the 70\u2019s.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Seems backwards using 70\u2019s technology on a 90\u2019s vehicle? Well unfortunately these 90\u2019s vehicles are basically using 70\u2019s mechanical ignition technology.<\/p><p><em><strong>How do I know if my Igniter is failing?<\/strong><\/em><\/p><p>The most common case, is you car has been driving normally.. you get to your destination, say a store for shopping. When you return to the car minutes later, it will not start and run. For 20-60minutes of messing with it, it will not start and run, and the engine doesn\u2019t have spark.&nbsp;&nbsp; You come back to it several hours later, and it starts and runs like there was never a problem.&nbsp;&nbsp; This will occur every time you drive it long enough for the motor to get warm.<\/p><p>Other times, you will be sitting at&nbsp; stop light, the engine will die and wont start and run again. Several hours later, it will.<\/p><p>Also intermittent stalling and sputtering are signs of a failing igniter.<\/p><p><em><strong>Why does the igniter fail?<\/strong><\/em><\/p><p>&nbsp; In this case, the stock igniter on these cars are built into the distributor, over time the heat and vibration damages the igniter to a point they begin to fail.<\/p><p><em><strong>Why not just replace the stock igniter?<\/strong><\/em><\/p><p>If you can find them, they are expensive, at-least to a point a re-manufactured distributor is the better option. They are soldered in, and internal of the distributor, witch will require dissembling the distributor and de-soldering.. all this work to have a undetermined amount of life of the distributor.<\/p><p><em><strong>What makes the HEI the best option over getting a new or reman distributor?<\/strong><\/em><\/p><p>A new distributor still has the same unpredictable failures as your failing distributor, it could fail the next day, a week, a month.. maybe years from when you put it in, but at some point it will leave you stranded, calling for a tow.&nbsp;&nbsp; The HEI on the other hand, while they are prone to failing, they are inexpensive, you could buy 3-4 of them for the cost of one distributor and keep them on hand, in the vehicle.&nbsp;&nbsp; They are mounted exterior of the distributor, meaning if you have a no start it issue leaving you stranded, swapping in a fresh HEI module in minutes may resolve everything.<\/p><\/div><\/div><div class=\"wpb_widgetised_column wpb_content_element\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><div id=\"custom_html-13\" class=\"widget_text widget widget_custom_html\"><div class=\"textwidget custom-html-widget\">&nbsp;<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_row-fluid\"><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner \"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><p><em><strong>What do I need to perform this modification?<\/strong><\/em><\/p><p>First you will need the HEI module, This can be found at any local parts store readily available, also online.<\/p><p>Common part numbers for this module:<\/p><table width=\"500\"><tbody><tr><td>&nbsp;Brand<\/td><td>Part #<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>GM<\/td><td>10482820<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Niehoff<\/td><td>DR400<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Wells<\/td><td>DR100<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><p>You will also need electrical terminals and some wire, this can also be found at a local parts store, Is recommended to get heat shrinking terminals to best reduce chances of bad wire connections.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"vce vce-separator-with-title-container vce-separator-with-title--align-center\" id=\"el-0bf60ecd\" data-vce-do-apply=\"margin el-0bf60ecd\"><div class=\"vce-separator-with-title vce-separator-with-title--color-bfc0c1 vce-separator-with-title--width-60\" data-vce-do-apply=\"border padding background  el-0bf60ecd\"><div class=\"vce-separator-with-title--line vce-separator-with-title--line--style-solid vce-separator-with-title-line--thickness-1 vce-separator-with-title--line-left\"><\/div><h3 class=\"vce-separator-with-title--title vce-separator-with-title--title--color-b-184-46-36\">Wiring Diagrams<\/h3><div class=\"vce-separator-with-title--line vce-separator-with-title--line--style-solid vce-separator-with-title-line--thickness-1 vce-separator-with-title--line-right\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"vce-row-container\" data-vce-boxed-width=\"true\"><div class=\"vce-row vce-row--col-gap-30 vce-row-equal-height vce-row-content--top\" id=\"el-badffc43\" data-vce-do-apply=\"all el-badffc43\"><div class=\"vce-row-content\" data-vce-element-content=\"true\"><div class=\"vce-col vce-col--md-auto vce-col--xs-1 vce-col--xs-last vce-col--xs-first vce-col--sm-last vce-col--sm-first vce-col--md-last vce-col--lg-last vce-col--xl-last vce-col--md-first vce-col--lg-first vce-col--xl-first\" id=\"el-ca5c94f3\"><div class=\"vce-col-inner\" data-vce-do-apply=\"border margin background  el-ca5c94f3\"><div class=\"vce-col-content\" data-vce-element-content=\"true\" data-vce-do-apply=\"padding el-ca5c94f3\"><div class=\"vce-text-block\"><div class=\"vce-text-block-wrapper vce\" id=\"el-c601cf33\" data-vce-do-apply=\"all el-c601cf33\"><div class=\"special-heading vntd-heading heading-border-inline heading-align-center\"><h3 class=\"special-heading-title\">93-94 HEI Wiring Diagrams<\/h3><p class=\"special-heading-subtitle\">With Coil and Without Coil<\/p><\/div><div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><p>Below are the following diagrams for the 1993-1994 models V6 Mx6, 626 and Ford Probe.&nbsp; If you are going to keep the stock internal coil, you will only need an HEI unit and follow the diagram, nothing else is needed.<\/p><p>If you are using an aftermarket coil, you will also need a 1k ohm resistor to solder inline for the stock tachometer. Failure to use this resister may ruin the stock tachometer.<\/p><p>The aftermarket coil shown in the diagram is for wiring reference only.
